BHU Computer Science Department Organizes Linux Install Fest to Promote FOSS Culture

Varanasi, January 17, 2026

The students of the Debuggers Coding Club of the Department of Computer Science, Institute of Science, BHU, successfully organised a "Linux Install Fest" on Saturday at the department premises. More than 30 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students from various faculties of the university attended the event.

The initiative was conceptualised by Satvik Patwardhan, a B.Sc. student of the department, with the aim of encouraging the adoption of secure and open-source computing solutions, while also addressing performance issues faced by students using aging or slow laptops. The event was conducted under the guidance of Prof. Manoj Kumar Singh, Professor, Department of Computer Science, whose academic mentorship and support played a key role in the smooth execution of the programme.

The programme was graced by the Chief Guest, Mr. Duvvuri Venu Gopal, Former Deputy Registrar (SRICC), BHU, who is renowned for his contributions to digital transformation initiatives at BHU and his extensive experience in conducting LaTeX and open-source workshops across various universities. Mr. Venu Gopal addressed the gathering and highlighted the significance of open-source software in academics, research, and sustainable technology practices.

Students actively participated in the event and received hands-on assistance with the safe installation of Linux operating systems. The event included systematic data backup procedures and introductory guidance on using Linux for academic and everyday applications.

The event received an enthusiastic response from the student community and underscored the department’s growing engagement with open-source culture and student-led technical initiatives.

The organising team expressed sincere gratitude to chief guest, the Department of Computer Science’s faculty members, volunteers, and participating students for their support in making the event a success.
